Health Services

Pharmacy

Pharmacy services are some of the most popular benefits for our patients. Prescription medications may be obtained at our pharmacies at no cost.  If you have a prescription from a TRICARE network or non-network doctor, you may fill it here.

Pharmacy Operations

Our Pharmacy processes new, renewal, and refill prescriptions. In most instances, a maximum of 90 days' supply can be dispensed per provider prescription for maintenance medications.
  • Contact your provider(s) for NEW or RENEWAL prescription requests. Prescription renewals are prescriptions that a patient has previously been taking, but a provider sends a new or updated version to the Pharmacy. This can happen if the patient has run out of refills, or the prescription has expired. Patients can request renewals via phone, in person at an appointment, or through secure messaging like the MHS Genesis Patient Portal. Your providers will be able to prescribe medications using both manual and electronic methods.
  • Activate your NEW prescription(s) at Naval Hospital Beaufort Main Pharmacy (All TRICARE beneficiaries), Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort Pharmacy (Active Duty and Clinic Staff only) or Marine Corps Depot Station Parris Island Pharmacy (Active Duty and Clinic Staff only)
  • All REFILL prescriptions must be requested in advance and are available for pick up at the ScriptCenter Kiosk (24/7, no refrigerated items) and the Refill (Drive-Thru) Pharmacy. Walk-in refills are available, but prescription wait times will vary.
TURNAROUND TIME for refill requests is up to three business days and patient does NOT typically receive a message when ready. Medications will be returned to the shelf 10 days after fill date.

TRICARE Formulary

The TRICARE Formulary (hyperlink to https://www.express-scripts.com/frontend/open-enrollment/tricare/fst/#/) contains a list of generic and brand-name prescription drugs covered by TRICARE. You can search the TRICARE Formulary to:
  • Verify cost and options for filling your medication
  • See if your prescription needs prior authorization
  • Look up the medical necessity criteria
  • Obtain prior authorization and medical necessity forms for your prescription
To start, search the brand or generic name of the medication and then select the strength prescribed, as well as your gender and age.
Naval Hospital Beaufort’s formulary has been expanded to align with the TRICARE Uniform Formulary.  The TRICARE Uniform Formulary is a list of brand name and generic drugs and supplies that TRICARE covers. If a medication is on the Formulary and all required paperwork is submitted and approved, medication can typically be ordered within 1-2 business days.

Prescription Costs

While there is no cost for prescriptions filled here, there are costs for filling prescriptions via home delivery or at network pharmacies for all non-active duty beneficiaries.
Active duty service members have a $0 copayment for covered drugs at any pharmacy.

Other Pharmacy Options

As a TRICARE beneficiary, you have other pharmacy options:

Medication Storage and Disposal

Proper medication storage helps prevent children and pets from accidentally getting into medications, which can lead to unintentional poisoning, overdose, permanent harm, and even death.  The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends putting medications up and away and out of children’s reach or sight.  The CDC also recommends putting medications away every time they are used and not leaving them on the counter or at the bedside.  Visit the CDC's website for more information on proper medication storage

Proper medication disposal reduces accumulation in the home and the subsequent risk of unintentional poisoning, drug abuse, and diversion.  The preferred method for proper medication disposal is at a designated drug takeback location. Naval Hospital Beaufort's medication disposal receptacle, located near the VA entrance of North Wing, is available for patients to use to discard most unused medications. Several exclusions apply, including syringes, needles, and liquids greater than 4 ounces.

Sharps and Needle Disposal is a guide providing information on the proper disposal of needles and syringes. However, patients are advised to follow local county/municipality guidelines on properly disposing needles and syringes.  Please visit the FDA's Safe Disposal of Medicines website for more information or contact the Pharmacy with questions.
