Frequently Asked Questions

  1. How long does it take to receive test results?
Depending on the test performed, most tests are completed and reported to your ordering healthcare provider within about 1 to 7 business days after receiving the sample for testing. Certain tests take several days to weeks. Results are sent directly to the ordering healthcare professional. Please ask your healthcare provider to contact you when your test results have been received.

  1. How can I receive a copy of my test results?
The Laboratory is prohibited from giving patient results to anyone other than licensed providers. Please contact your healthcare provider or MHS Genesis Patient Portal at https://my.mhsgenesis.health.mil/. Additionally, you can contact Outpatient Medical Records Department to obtain copies of your test results.

  1. Can the laboratory help me interpret my results?
Please address questions related to interpretation of your test results to your personal healthcare provider. Your doctor will interpret your lab test results (determine their meaning) in conjunction with information about your medical history, physical examination, and other test results, and provide you with medical advice, diagnosis or treatment.

  1. Are my results confidential?
Yes. This laboratory adheres to test result information disclosure laws. The lab report is sent to the ordering physician or other authorized person(s) who has requested the test. Please contact your primary care provider (PCM) for further information regarding your results.

  1. My provider has requested a test that requires fasting. What is required?
Eating or drinking can cause inaccurate results on some tests. We ask that for those tests, you refrain from eating or drinking anything other than water or prescribed medications for 12 hours before these tests are collected.

  1. What if my laboratory test cannot be collected at this location due to special requirements?
If your PCM is the one who placed the laboratory order, please contact your clinic and the provider will give you a referral for outside collection. If you received the laboratory orders from an outside provider, please take the laboratory orders to their recommended in-network collection site.

  1. What do I need to bring with me?
You will need to bring your military or dependent ID card. If you are coming for orders that you received from a provider outside of a military treatment facility you will need to bring a paper copy of the laboratory order request signed by the provider.

  1. I was given lab orders from an outside provider. Am I required to utilize the Naval Hospital’s laboratory?

No, you can use an in-network laboratory if you have an active referral, or if you have Tricare Select. There is a $0 co-pay for DoD beneficiaries at in-network laboratories. Bring your Military ID card and a copy of the lab slip / order from your doctor to give to the network laboratory. Your results will electronically transfer to your MHS Genesis electronic health record/patient portal and will be visible to MTF providers. Any questions please contact Tricare at 800-444-5445.
